Youth/Young Adults Project
Over the past year we were lucky to secure funding to better support young people aged 16-25. Born through understanding the needs of the young people of our area, this programme was created to not only increase awareness of advice services and make young people more aware of their rights and responsibilities; but to importantly provide support with their personal development and employability opportunities.
The heart of the programme is to train up young mentors who have information that is relatable to them, and to spread this information to their peers.
- It takes a youth-work approach; putting young people at the heart of the decision making
- Starting at our young people consulting with their peers over issues they want to know
- Into developing these young leaders to active citizens in their community. Who have the skills, knowledge and confidence to inform their peers with the information they want to know.
So far, those who have benefited from this programme are young people from HMYOI Polmont, Celtic Foundation and a range of pupils from local high schools. Our young people not only have increased their knowledge of basic CAB issues, such as “I didn’t know a mortgage was a debt” but also crucially raising opportunities, confidence and life chances;
“XX has given the go ahead for my money management workshops. Thank you for believing in me even when I didn’t. I can’t wait to start working on it with you.”
“I’ve only ever been offered labour jobs after getting out [HMYOI] because of my conviction. Not once has anyone said I could use my brain. What opportunities would your place offer me when I’m out?”
This project has gone from strength to strength and the future looks bright. If you are a potential partner who wants your young people trained, or just want more information for this - we would love to hear from you.
